    “Radiant…commanding…compelling…impressively touching” are amongst the accolades for Lara Ryan’s recent performance as the title role in Victor Herbert’s grand opera Natoma (Gerald Steichen, conductor), staged recently for the first time since 1914.

     

    She has performed at Carnegie Hall under the baton of famed composer John Rutter on numerous occasions in recent seasons, singing the Mozart Requiem and Rutter’s Magnificat. Other recent solo Carnegie Hall appearances include the Duruflé Requiem with the Manhattan Concert Chorale (Masterworks Series) and the Mozart Requiem with Mid-America Productions. Ryan has concertized and performed operatic and musical theatre roles with Anchorage Opera, Utah Festival Opera, Belleayre Music Festival, Holders Music Festival in Barbados, Chelsea Opera and Encompass New Opera Theatre where she created the roles of The Grieving Mother in Louis Gioia’s I tre compagni and the title role in Evan Mack’s The Angel of the Amazon. Ryan has placed in numerous vocal competitions, including Joy in Singing, The New York Oratorio Society’s Lyndon B. Woodside Prize, American Traditions Competition, the Rochester Oratorio Competition, the Classical Singer Competition, and also was a recipient of the Frederich Schorr Prize in Voice. She performed in the Brahms/Mahler Masterclasses with legendary Mezzo Soprano Christa Ludwig at Carnegie Hall and studied Lieder in Freiburg, Germany with Baritone Hörst Günter.

     

    Ms. Ryan sang excerpts from West Side Story in the Young People’s Concerts series with The New York Philharmonic and was a soloist in two recent Collegiate Chorale (Master Voices) productions, Kurt Weill & Ira Gershwin’s operetta, The Firebrand of Florence, starring Nathan Gunn and Victoria Clark, and A White House Cantata by Leonard Bernstein and Alan Jay Lerner, starring Dwayne Croft and Emily Pulley. Ryan’s cross-over work in other musical genres includes collaborations with such jazz and cabaret luminaries as Ted Rosenthal, Tedd Firth, Evan Christopher, Peter Mintun, Jay Beckenstein, and Jeremy Wall of Spyro Gyra, and she is the vocalist and recording artist for the jazz trio, “Ellys & The Gin Rickeys”.

     

    In recent seasons past, Ms. Ryan sang three separate heroines in a concert of operatic finales from Aida, Ariadne auf Naxos and Otello with the Madison Lyric Opera, a recital of Berg’s Seven Early Songs at the New York Bar Association’s Chamber Music Series, and covered the soprano solos for Frank Ferko’s Stabat Mater in the Sacred Music in a Sacred Space Concert Series in New York City. In the 2016-2017 season she made house debuts at Long Beach Opera and Chicago Opera Theatre in the US premiere of Philip Glass’ The Perfect American and sang Desdemona in Verdi’s Otello for Madison Lyric Opera. Most recently she was the soprano soloist for Strauss’s Vier letzte Lieder with the Greeley Philharmonic and returned to Long Beach Opera for Gian Carlo Menotti’s The Consul, starring Patricia Racette.

     

    She received her Bachelor’s in Vocal Performance from Chapman University and her Master’s in Vocal Performance from the University of Southern California She currently resides in New York City with her husband, baritone Justin Ryan, and their 18 pound cat, Uncle Billy.
